Adobe Illustrator program offers in font control in all conceivable parameters: a typeface and outline choice, determination of a size and leading, kerning and tracking, shift possibility on verticals and rotations. And parameters can be defined before typing, and also to change parameters already typed and formatted before the text.

By font control in parameters it is carried out by means of two palettes ? Character (Character) and Paragraph (Paragraph). Besides, some parameters have own menus or palettes.

To open on the screen palettes Character (Character) and Paragraph (Paragraph), it is necessary to fulfill one of commands Character (Character) or Paragraph (Paragraph) of menu Type (Text). Normally these palettes form uniform group, and by a call of one there is also another - Certainly, at will of them it is possible to divide. Both palettes have additional fields which are caused by command Show Options (Additional parameters) the menu of palettes.

Display of the auxiliary characters

At typing besides actually semantic characters in the document some auxiliary signs which on the press are not deduced take place also and is normal on the screen are not displayed. Blank characters concern them (), tabulation (), line feed (), a paragraph break () and some other, for example.

At the same time, that it is better to be guided in text structure, it is useful to include display of the auxiliary characters to the screen. Command Show Hidden Characters (to Show the latent characters) menu Type (Text) provides an output to the screen of all latent characters (fig. 11.12).

Choice of typeface of a font

The font typeface is understood as the font set, having a uniform style picture and a uniform name, for example, sets Times, Helvetica. A decor, Lazursky and many, many other things.

In the modern computer systems providing of access to font resources for specific applications including Adobe Illustrator programs, is one of the primary goals of an operating system, in particular Windows 98/2000.

And support of a set of fonts, except for several fonts-delivered with system or any application, ? a prerogative of the user.

Palette Character (Character) in list Font (Font) and command Font (Typeface) of the menu ROUND (Text) display lists of typefaces of the fonts installed in a specific operating system.

In the left list fields Font (Font) palettes Character (Character) (fig. 11.13) are presented titles of typefaces, and in right ? their outlines ? the specific type of a font different from other fonts of the same typeface by a saturation (for example, Bold ? semiboldface) and an inclination (for example, Italic ? italic).

If the user is well familiar with the "a font economy" enough to type in a left margin the first letters of a title of the necessary typeface. The program automatically completes a name and carries out a choice.

The same reception "works" and with a right margin in which it is enough to enter, for example, a letter "?" that the program installed an outline "Bold" (semiboldface).

For choice end it is necessary to push a key <Enter> or <???>.

The typeface choice can be carried out and by means of command Font (Set) of menu Type (Text). For a choice of an outline of specific typeface it is necessary to cause the additional menu, pushing an arrow more to the right of a name. The amount of outlines can change from one to four. If the typeface has only one outline the additional menu misses.

Selected by that or otherwise the font becomes active, ?. E - all texts will be formatted by this font before following determination.

Unfortunately, in the program there is a font print preview as it is used for a long time, for example, in program CorelDRAW, therefore the typeface choice considerably is at a loss in connection with impossibility quickly to view a fragment of the text with various design.

Setting of a size of a font

The size named by printers by "size", as a rule, is measured in points which is equal 1/72 Anglo-American inches (25,4 mm) or 1/72 French inches (26,03 mm) ? the point of Dido traditionally used in the continental European countries, and also in Russia and in the USSR.

Nota Bene. It is necessary to have ? to a type that the point of Dido in Adobe Illustrator program is not applied.

Value of a size can be defined in the menu (only one size from a dial-up fixed) and in the field Size (Size) palettes Character (Character) (fig. 11.14) which allows to use the list of fixed values and to install the arbitrary value with step 0,1 points in a range from 0,1 to 1296 points. Such broad range means almost continuous scale of the sizes.

To install specific value it is possible by input of number and key press [Enter] or [???], and it is possible with usage of buttons with upward facing arrows or downwards, click on which increases or reduces value of a size by 1 unit.

By default the program uses a size equal to 12 Anglo-American points.

In the program of adobe Illustrator the type size can be measured and in other units, namely:

	Points (Points)
	Inches (Inches)
	Millimeters (Millimeters)
	Q, standard units (abbreviation from a word quarter ? "quarter"), equal 0,25 millimeters
	Pixels (???????)

The choice of a unit of measure of a font is carried out in list Type (For the text) section Units and Undo (Units of measure and a canceling of commands) dialog box Preferences (Setting) which is caused by menu command Edit with the same name (Editing).

Size of a font of the selected text it is possible to increase or reduce by means of the keypad - the Keyboard shortcut [Shift] + [Ctrl] + [>] increases a size, and a keyboard shortcut [Shift] + [Ctrl] + [("more")<] ("??????") ? ????????? ???.

The level of magnification or reduction of a size by means of the keypad is installed in the field Size/Leading (Size/leading) of section Type and Auto Tracing (Shchrift and autotrace) dialog box Preferences (Setting) in a range from 0,1 to 72 points. By default value 2 points is accepted.

Search and changeover of font formatting

In Adobe Illustrator program search of the unit () texts having this or that font formatting, and its changeover by the unit with other formatting is implemented. This possibility reminds search and text changeover. Accepted in all program applications working with the text.

In addition the program makes the list of the typefaces used in the given document, and. That is very important at a document transfer to other hands, it is possible to save the list in the form of the separate text file.

For changeover of font formatting it is necessary to execute command Find Font (to Find a font) menu Type (Text), as a result on the screen the dialog box with the same name (fig. 11.15) is deduced.

In window Fonts in Document (the Current font list) is displayed the list of all typefaces of a font used in the given document, and in right upper to a corner ? their amount. If to select any line from the given list, the program discovers the first unit of the text issued by this font. The following unit is the program on click on button Find Next (to Search following).

If needed to replace a font follows in list Replace Font From (the Font list for changeover) to select a demanded font for changeover, and it is given two variants of this list:

	The choice of variant Document (In the document) opens the list only those fonts which are used in the given document;
	The choice of variant System (In system) allows to display the list of all fonts of an operating system.

Besides, the list composition is regulated by setting of flags:

	Type 1
	Standard (Standard: Courier, Helvetica, Symbol and Times)
	Roman (Dialup)
	True Type
	CID (the expanded format for Far East languages)
	Multiple Master
	OTF (OpenType Format)

To make the list of fonts of format Multiple Master. Flags Multiple Master and Type 1 should be simultaneously switched on. As format Multiple Master forms on the basis of a format of adobe Type 1.

Changeover of the font design selected from window Fonts in Document (the Current font list), by the font design selected from window Replace Font From (the Font list for changeover), is fulfilled by one of two buttons:

	For changeover only in the selected unit button Change is used to (Replace)
	For changeover in all units of the document button Change All (to Replace all) is used.

After the full changeover of an initial font his name is eliminated from the list in window Fonts in Document (the Current font list).

Button Save List is intended for saving of the list of the used fonts to (Save), which displays dialog box Save Font List As (to Save the font list).

Leading and ??????? the paragraph

In a text dial-up as leading (leading) understand distance between basic lines of adjacent lines. This distance has the major value for comfortable perception of the text.

Value of leading is defined depending on character (presence or absence of portable elements) and type size, and also from width of a line. The firm of adobe adheres to a simple ratio: leading by default makes 120 % of a size.

This value turns out at a choice of variant Auto (Car) in palette Character (Character). It changes every time when value of a size changes. At a dial-up rather small size (8?14 points) such leading can be used quite, however for more large print it is required to estimate attentively visual impression of a ratio "a size ? width of a line ? leading".

For leading setting in palette Character (Character) (fig. 11.16) the same receptions that are used at size setting: value of leading is selected from the list, entered by means of number keys, decreases or increases clicks on buttons with arrows.

For setting of value of the leading equal to value a skittle, double click on an icon more to the left from the list suffices. For value recovery by default (120 %) are necessary to click on the same icon with a pushed key [Ctrl].

Leading of the selected text can be increased or reduced and by means of the keypad. The keyboard shortcut [Alt] + [] reduces leading, and a keyboard shortcut [Alt] + [] ? increases it.

The level of magnification or reduction of leading by means of the keypad is installed in the field Size/Leading (Size/leading) of section Type and Auto Tracing (the Font and autotrace) dialog box Preferences (Setting) (fig. 11.54 see) in a range from 0,1 to 72 points. By default the value equal to 2 points is accepted.

In design of printing issuings one of methods of improving of perception of the text widely applies the increased leading between finite and initial lines of adjacent paragraphs (so-called "??????? the paragraph"). ??????? it can be used both instead of a new paragraph, and in a combination to it.

??????? the paragraph it is applied for block (?????????) the text in which it is possible to select one or several paragraphs by means of the appropriate tool groups Type (Text) or all unit - by means of tool Selection (Selection). ??????? the paragraph it is set in the field Leading Before Paragraph (Otbivka before the paragraph) (fig. 11.17) palettes Paragraph (Paragraph).
