Measuring rulers

By default measuring rulers on the screen are not deduced, but at any moment the user can get access to them if to execute command Show Rulers (to Show rulers) menu View (Review) (fig. 3.10).

After an output of rulers to the screen command Show Rulers (to Show rulers) is replaced with command Hide Rulers (to Hide rulers) which is intended for removal of rulers from the screen.

Setting of units of measure

In the program of adobe Illustrator of a ruler can display divisions of various units of measure depending on need and habits of the user. By default the unit of measure installs point (point).

For change of a unit of measure it is necessary to address to command Preferences (Setting) and to select section Units and Undo (Units of measure and a canceling of commands).

To install units of measure it is possible to use also command Document Setup (document Parameters) menu File (File) which displays the dialog box with the same name (fig. 3.11).

Adobe Illustrator program supports following units of measure:

Points (Points), 1 point it is equal 1/72 English inches (0,3528 mm)
Picas (Peaks), 1 peak it is equal to 12 points
Inches (Inches), 1 inch it is equal to 24,5 millimeters
Millimeters (Millimeters)
Centimeters (Centimeters)
Pixels (???????)
Rice 3.11. Dialog box Document Setup with the open list of units of measure

Distinction between setting of units of measure in dialog boxes Preferences (Setting) and Document Setup (document Parameters) consists that in the first case of setting concern the program, and in the second ? to the specific document.

To select a unit of measure it is possible from the list which opens at right click of the mouse in the field of intersection of two rulers (fig. 3.12).

Rice 3.12. The list of units of measure for rulers of a working window

The selected unit of measure concerns setting of a grid and guides, to measurement and relocation of objects, to creation of rectangles and ellipses, but does not influence palettes Character (Character) and Paragraph (Paragraph) in which values of a size, leading, relocation of a basic line and others are installed in the field Type (Font) of section Units and Undo (Units of measure and a canceling of commands). About font units of measure look chapter 11.

Automatic recalculation of values in other units of measure

In Adobe Illustrator program the useful function connected to units of measure is presented. Numerical fields allow to enter values not only in the installed unit of measure, but also in any admissible. And the program automatically enumerates value in a demanded unit of measure.

For example, if at present as a current unit of measure the inch is installed, but it is required to enter value, for example, in centimeters (that not surprisingly for the Russian user) it is possible to enter value in centimeters ? "5 cm", and the program automatically "translates" this value in inches.

Moreover, the necessary value can be entered in the form of the simple formula, i.e. to use signs on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and calculation of percent.

For example, it is possible to enter such values: "40 in - 2", "40 in + 2 cm".

Thus it is necessary to adhere to following rules.

For instructions of units of measure abbreviations are used: in ? for inches, mm ? for millimeters, cm ? for centimeters, ? or pt ? for points and ?? ? for peak. The program admits also other variants of the name of units of measure (inch, inches, millimeters, millimeters, centimeters, points, picas, Q, equal 0,25 mm). Though these variants, perhaps, not so are convenient.
Units of measure and "pica" can be entered "point" as follows: "10?6" that means 10 peak and points, i.e. 126 points.
Value without instructions of units is considered value in a current unit of measure.
The percent sign can be used in a combination to any units of measure and arithmetical signs. For example, expression "4?m*50 %" means "2 sm".

Relocation of the beginning of coordinates

By default (it is one of language standards PostScript) the beginning of coordinates coincides with the lower left corner of page. In this case all coordinates on page have the positive values.

However for those or other purposes relocation of the beginning of coordinates can be demanded. It is easy for making manually: it is enough to push the mouse button in the field of intersection of two rulers and, without releasing it, to move a point of the beginning of coordinates to any demanded place (fig. 3.13).

Rice 3.13. Relocation of the beginning of coordinates

For reset of the beginning of coordinates to position by default it is enough to fulfill double click in the field of intersection of two rulers.

Nota Bene. It is necessary to pay special attention on relocation of the beginning of coordinates because it can be reflected in layout of elements of decorative filling. The information on it look in chapter 8.

Setting of parameters of page

The format of printing page (artboard size) is understood as the maximum size of sheet used on the exterior device. For example, in the United States such format for normal laser printers is format Letter (8,5?11 inches), and in Russia and in the European countries ? format ?4 (210?297 mm).

These sizes should not be confused to the sizes of printing area which in a state to seal the printer: these sizes are not standard and fluctuate depending on type and a printer construction (for example, at the majority of laser printers the gap between edge of a standard sheet and print area makes 3?5 mm).

To change a standard format or to install the arbitrary size of printing page, it is necessary to cause dialog box Document Setup (document Parameters) on the screen, fulfilling menu command File (File) with the same name.

In section Artboard (Mounting area) (fig. 3.14) all parameters of a format of page are presented.

List Size (Size) offers a choice of standard formats printing; boundaries. After a variant choice in fields Width (Width) and Height (Height) o??????????? page sizes. If in this field to enter the arbitrary values in the list variant Custom (Custom) will be displayed, thus the range of admissible values makes from 50,8 to 5779,55 mm.

Rice 3.14. Field Artboard of dialog box Document Setup

The program gives the chance "setups" to the current printer: if to install flag Use Print Setup (On page size) the document format will use parameters of a paper of the active printer.

In list Units (Unit) it is possible to install other unit of measure, selecting one of variants.

And at last, two buttons in the field Orientation (Orientation) allow to define document layout on printing page: book (it is included by default) or landscape.

After button click ?? on the screen the rectangle representing working page with appropriate parameters (fig. 3.15) is displayed.
